"The music of France is incredibly diverse, with a plethora of styles such as chanson and bal musette being popular nationwide. Local regions within the country, some with their own languages, are preserving and developing their own musical traditions. The arrival of migrants from all over the former French Empire, and elsewhere, during the last 100 years or so has added new sounds to this mix. This CD to The Music Of France gives you a glimpse of the variety of instruments, vocal styles, influences and dialects, taking you on a musical Tour de France. Enjoy!......at 192.0 kb/sec!"

The Rough Guide To Paris Café Music

Paris Café Music

Audio CD: FDO 2002-02-25
Label: World Music Network

"This CD conjures up the romantic image of accordion music floating through wisps of smoke from a Gitanes, the voice of Edith Piaf and a moonlit Eiffel Tower. This style of music is known as bal-musette and grew from the music of the immigrant communities in Paris at the turn of the last century. This unique and comprehensive collection traces the music from its lowly roots in the café-charbons to its modern incarnations in modern jazz and rock-musette with tracks from its seminal artists.... at 192 kbps!"
