The Rough Guide To The Music Of Latin Arabia

Various Artists
Audio CD: FDO 2006-11-07
Label: World Music Network
"The Rough Guide to Latin-Arabia journeys to the little known but highly musical region of Latin-Arabia, located somewhere between Cairo and Havana. Here, it fuses three of the most popular dance styles: belly dance, salsa and flamenco, and is a vibrant and playful release that invites you to dance! The liner notes to this Rough Guide compilation cite Shakira’s "Ojos Asi" as an example of Latin and Arabic musical cultures colliding, though apparently it’s likely that the two have mingling and cross-pollinating as far back as the ninth century when Muslim North African forces invaded Iberia back in 812 AD. Personally I think it’s rather mean to try and undermine Shakira’s achievements in bringing people together. Gabriel Garcia Marquez is a big fan, you know, and he’s got a Nobel Prize. The disc summarises the manifold variations of the cultural fusion of Latina and Arabic song and instrumentation. Another indispensable primer for any listener with the vaguest interest in world (international) music. Enjoy!......at 320.0 kb/sec!"
