The Rough Guide To The Music Of Morocco

Various
Audio CD: FDO 2004-02-09
Label: World Music Network
"Morocco is a musical wonderland, stuffed with a bewildering surfeit of sounds; raw, sophisticated, ancient, modern, acoustic, electronic, mellow, fierce, deeply spiritual and extravagantly hedonistic. Culturally fed by rivers flowing in from all directions, its musical gene pool is rich and diverse, although the unique legacy of Morocco’s own native Berber culture remains more rooted than any imported influences. This album features two of Morocco’s musical giants, Jil Jilala and Nass El Ghiwane, the best-loved Moroccan female group, Bnet Marrakech and the greatest al aita star of modern times, Fatna Bent El Houcine. Delving into some of Morocco’s musical traditions, such as melhoun and gnawa, this CD to The Music Of Morocco also features some of the more contemporary and electronic sounds to have emerged out of this culturally rich country. The Rough Guide To Bollywood Legends: Mohammed Rafi

Various
Audio CD: FDO 2004-04-19
Label: World Music Network
"Over the years, Bollywood’s dream-weavers have adopted many faces and many voices. Since the late 1940s, people have known, or suspected, that the face in close-up on the screen is probably lip-synching to a ‘playback singer’, and in the annals of Bollywood, Mohammed Rafi’s star shines bright. Decades after his death in July 1980 (at the age of 56), he remains one of the four most influential playback singers ever, alongside Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. His voice brought fantasy to life, and he continues to inspire succeeding generations. This album pays tribute to his overwhelming influence in the subcontinent and beyond. The Rough Guide to Mambo

Various
Audio CD: FDO 2004-02-24
Label: World Music Network
"With its origins in Cuba and hugely influenced by the New York dancehalls and orchestras, mambo’s driving rhythms and swinging horns are an original and distinctive Latin dance sound. With a golden age in the 1950s, mambo’s retro chic is more popular than ever today – especially on the salsa scene where dancers eager to check out frantic mambo rhythms can expand their feet skills. This CD To Mambo is an exceptional collection from the great originators and pioneers, such as Pérez Prado, Machito and Tito Puente who developed mambo history, to today’s mambo artists, such as Snowboy and Mamborama, whose exploration is reinventing the genre. Enjoy!......at 320.0 kb/sec!"

The Rough Guide To The Music Of Kenya

Various
Audio CD: FDO 2004-05-10
Label: World Music Network
"High-energy benga music, with its pulsating beat and funky interlocking guitar riffs, has been at the forefront of Kenyan pop since the late 1960s. More recently, contemporary artists, such as Gidi Gidi Maji Maji and Nyota Ndogo, have been exploring the possibilities of merging traditional melodies, instruments and rhythms with new sounds from R&B and other international genres. In addition, taarab music – a mixture of Indian Ocean and coastal traditions – and rumba-based Swahili and Lingala music are phenomenally popular. This CD To The Music Of Kenya spans these styles from classic benga gems, to sparkling new taarab compositions, with a sampling of the most innovative sounds of Kenya’s hip hop generation. The Rough Guide To Gypsy Swing

Various
Audio CD: FDO 2004-04-19
Label: World Music Network
"Forged by the work of Django Reinhardt – arguably the finest jazz guitarist of all time – Manouche or Gypsy swing is a fascinating blend of Gypsy virtuosity and American jazz. In 1930s France, this new ‘swing’ music had a profound impact on the local musical scene and although the music’s creator died in 1953, his music remains highly influential to this day. Django Reinhardt created a tradition, which has been perpetuated and developed by many exceptional contemporary musicians. The CD Gypsy Swing celebrates this style from the original Gypsy musicians of the time to those French and German musicians, mainly of Manouche origin, who have built on Django’s legacy and continue down the road of innovation. The Rough Guide To The Music Of Ethiopia

Various
Audio CD: FDO 2004-02-24
Label: World Music Network
"This CD is a fine introduction to the exotic twists and turns of the nation's song. Driving sax grooves, ululating vocals, funk guitar, fat horn sections, it's all here. Mostly electric and urban, the CD ends with a sample of traditional music by Aldaneh Teka, an azmari (the Ethiopian version of a griot) who sings and plays masenqo (a bowed single stringed viola). The music of Ethiopia is unlike anything else from Africa, and can be challenging to the uninitiated ear, but this collection is a great starting point. Enjoy!......at 320.0 kb/sec!"

Mixing rap with samba, soul, reggae, bossa nova, acid-jazz, poetry and rock, the tracks featured on this record to Brazilian Hip-Hop are a sampling of the most innovative sounds of Brazil’s hip-hop generation.
