The Rough Guide To Salsa Dance ''First Edition''

Various

Audio CD: FDO 2005-03-07
Label: World Music Network

"With its intensely percolating blend of melodic vigor, horn-motivated harmony, jazzy improvisation, polyrhythmic percussion, and soulful sense of celebration, Latin music at its best is arguably the world's most enjoyably complex form of dance music. Immensely entertaining if scattershot, this wide-ranging, filler-free introduction to the salsa tradition samples four decades' worth of music from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Colombia, and, of course, New York's Fania stable (where it first exploded in the 1970s). The anthology ranges from the early '60s Cuban boogaloo of Joe Cuba to Sierra Maestra's classic son (from whence salsa evolved) to seventysomething Celia Cruz's relentless energy. Sophisticated arrangements by Fania star Willie Colon, inventive pianist Charlie Palmieri, and young trombone upstart Jimmy Bosch offset the kicking sounds of La Misma Gente ("Raquel") and Dominican-born singer Jose Alberto.Enjoy!!!..... at 192 kbps!"

The Rough Guide To English Roots Music

Various

Audio CD: FDO 1998-08-25
Label: World Music Network

"Since the '60s, the vibrant English folk scene has seen a rich harvest of talent. This CD selection samples some of its ripest fruits and reminds us that branches as diverse as the stalwart Norfolk singer Harry Cox (born 1885) and blunt Cockney Billy Bragg share a common root.Revivalist mainstays such as Martin Carthy, the Watersons, and the Albion Band are all well-represented (the only notable absence being Steeleye Span), and with talents ranging from Eliza Carthy and the unmatchable Northumbrian piper Billy Pigg to the troubadours Rory MacLeod and John Kirkpatrick, there's something here for every taste. Anyone who still hankers after the illusion of Ye Olde England ignores this music's obvious vitality, as Billy Bragg tellingly reminds us in his classic "A New England". This English tradition is alive, well, and still has plenty to say!......... at 256 kbps!"

The Rough Guide To Reggae

Various

Audio CD: FDO 1997-10-27
Label: World Music Network

"Reggae is a music genre developed in Jamaica in the late 1960s. The term is sometimes used in a broad sense to refer to most types of Jamaican music, including ska, rocksteady and dub. The term is more specifically used to indicate a particular style that originated after the development of rocksteady. In this sense, reggae includes two subgenres: roots reggae (the original reggae) and dancehall reggae, which originated in the late 1970s. Reggae is founded upon a rhythm style characterized by regular chops on the off-beat, known as the skank. The tempo is generally slower than that found in reggae's precursors, ska and rock steady. Reggae is often associated with the Rastafari movement, which influenced many prominent reggae musicians in the 1970s and 1980s. Reggae song lyrics deal with many subjects, including faith, love, sexuality and broad social issues.!......... at 160 kbps!"

Senior Nada

Victor Monasterio

Audio CD: FDO 2005-10-25
Label: R D V Monasterio

"The music in this Album was composed by Victor Monasterio. All tracks performed by Victor, with the exception of Ekeko, El Poeta, Asi Es El Cariño, where Grigo Monasterio plays other guitar and zampoña, and Julian Monasterio plays Violin in Mamaquilla. I am not in the business of making money through music, just listening and playing, singing and writing. For those who download this album and would like a hard copy of the cd, then go to CD BABY and purchase a copy there, or alternatively buy mp3's from my little iTunes page. This is the only way I can raise funds to continue recording music. Other than that, music is free, it comes free to me, it goes out freely to those who wish to listen!......... at 192 kbps!"

The Rough Guide To World Music

Various

Audio CD: FDO 1994-10-25
Label: World Music Network

"I hate world music," wrote David Byrne, who went on to explain that he disliked a vague marketing label that ghettoized the majority of the world's music. The Rough Guiders who compiled this insanely far-flung anthology, conversely, apparently adore the term's catchall nature. Which is why you'll find everything from Colombian salsa fireball Joe Arroyo to the Gaelic "mouth music" of Scot singer Talitha MacKenzie here and a whole lot more. World music usually signifies roots less than fusion, which is why Mali singer Oumou Sangare's electrified traditionalism sounds just fine beside the avant-psychedelic guitar of Henry Kaiser and Malagasy singer Roger Georges. A certain disproportion is probably inevitable. Africa, with its incomparable dance rhythms, weighs in heavy with contributions by Youssou N'Dour (Senegal), Zaiko Langa Langa (Zaire), and Cecile Kayirebwa (Rwanda), while Asia is represented only by Guo Yue and Joji Hirota's flute duo. Irish folk, Louisiana zydeco, and Nubian blues are also represented here. But anyone interested in learning more about these artists will have to refer back to The Rough Guide to World Music for more information!......... at 192 kbps!"

The Rough Guide To Classic Jazz

Various

Audio CD: FDO 1996-05-13
Label: World Music Network

"The 1920's and early 1930's was the great era of Jazz. This album spans the period, showcasing the big names, as well as some lesser known gems. If you're trying to build a collection of classic jazz, start here. Along with the usual King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton tracks, this also has Pinetop Smith's "Pinetop's Boogie Woogie," the first example of the genre on record, as well as the original Victor recording of Duke Ellington's "Creole Love Call" with Adelaide Hall. The only fly in the ointment is that these recordings are culled from Robert Parker's reissues, which are controversial in the way that they reprocess old recorded sound. If you're a purist, you may eventually replace this CD in your collection, but it is a wonderful way to start!......... at 128 kbps!"

The Rough Guide To The Music Of Okinawa

Various

Audio CD: FDO 2001-07-10
Label: World Music Network

"Lovely Asian music with a certain island flavour. Like the rest of the series, this CD covers a good spectrum of music, from traditional to various pop styles. Typical instruments used in Okinawan music are the sanshin (a kind of banjo), castanets, recorders, flutes, guitars and taiko drums playing shuffling syncopated rythms. Featured are such diverse talents as Ryukyu Underground, with their ambient drum'n'bass / reggae dub stylings, the Dick Dale influenced Surf Champlers, folk music legends Rinsho Kadekaru and Tetsuhiro Daiku, the wacky pop of Donto and Shisars with their meddley of musical styles pushing Okinawan music to the outer limits. Every song has something to offer to fans of Eastern music, because island music is by nature full of many exotic influences, blown in by all the trade winds. The voices of all the women, from Chieko Iha to Nenes, are beautiful. I'll risk losing my reputation as an objective reviewer by saying that the song "Shimajima Kaisha" by the group Four Sisters, always brings tears to my eyes. Recorders sounding like the warm trade winds, a rolling beat like the waves and sweetly tragic female vocals like cries over the sundering Sea. To round off a nice package, the liner notes by music guru Paul Fisher are excellent.!......... at 160 kbps!"
