"The second disc of Christmas Hits is more laid back, with classics from Bing Crosby, Elvis and Tony Bennett mingled with some soulful covers of traditional songs like "Silent Night" and modern classics such as "Last Christmas" and "Walking in the Air". Unfortunately, both of the latter are tortured by Human Nature and Declan Galbraith respectively, and its here that the compilation starts to fall apart. Some of the covers are interesting, but often they highlight just how much better the originals were. There have been plenty of great versions of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town", not to mention the original so why do we get Michael Bolton? The inclusion of Eva Cassidy's "Over the Rainbow" is also a little confusing. It's poignant sure, but since when has it been associated with Christmas? "It's refreshing to hear a version of "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" that doesn't reference the arrangement Phil Spector came up with on A Christmas Gift for You four decades ago. Barry Manilow's rendition was inspired by Bing Crosby's 1945 collaboration with the Andrews Sisters. And that pretty much explains where the artist is coming from on the majority of this holiday offering. This is a big orchestrated (and voiced) Christmas album, most of it well suited for delivery on a Broadway stage. Accordingly, the singer picks holiday-themed tunes from the likes of Rodgers & Hammerstein, Sammy Cahn & Jule Styne, Irving Berlin, and Frank Loesser. Then, just to confuse things a bit (this is, after all, someone who had a huge hit with Ian Hunter's "Ships"), Manilow throws in a superb cover of "River," Joni Mitchell's ode to Christmas depression. "After nearly five decades of making music, B.B. King ducked into the studio with his touring band to come up with his very first holiday album, A Christmas Celebration Of Hope. Despite bringing in The Nashville String Machine, co-producer King used them in a way that enhanced his rich singing on lush versions of Billy Ward's "Christmas In Heaven" and a pair of Charles Brown perennials--"Please Come Home For Christmas" and "Merry Christmas Baby." Other artists getting the royal treatment are Clarence Carter (a funky "Back Door Santa") and Amos Milburn (the brass-soaked "Christmas Comes But Once A Year"). Interestingly, at the time of the first album's original release, "White Christmas" composer Irving Berlin was so offended by Elvis's rendition that he actually wrote to major radio stations asking them not to play it. "Very wholesome, traditional Christmas music. Colorado Christmas is a family favorite here in Colorado but the entire CD is well done. Highly enjouable. I first heard Colorado Christmas on the radio during my first Christmas trip to the most beautiful state in the USA. Wonderful music. I had no idea who the band were at that time but I knew I had to get the album. It took some finding, first on cassette then on CD. It's my favourite Christmas song on a great album; reminds me of Colorado ski trips every time I play it. The Christmas Album finds the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band turning in a typically tasteful album and a surprisingly strong country holiday record. Along with a couple recent holiday tunes and originals, the Dirt Band puts their distinctive spin on traditional carols like "Silver Bells," "Silent Night," and "Little Drummer Boy." But the real unexpected wonder here is when Denver steps out of the spiritual aspect of the season for a heart-wrenching cover of "Blue Christmas." For all those who never thought of John Denver as a romantic type, this ought to erase those doubts.
