The Rough Guide To Merengue & Bachata

Various
Audio CD: FDO 2001-10-01
Label: World Music Network

"This CD presents two essential beats from the Dominican Republic, merengue and bachata. With its driving 2/4 beat, merengue's sexy rhythms, the heart beat of the Dominican Republic's streets, encourages hips to swing in every dance hall in the Latin Caribbean and its popularity has spread to the USA and South America. From the north of the island's countryside comes, the largely undiscovered, bachata. This soulful music of the poor and lovers, with its guitar riffs reminiscent of Central Africa and emotional male vocals, is a Latin secret worth uncovering. This long awaited album brings together the greats of merengue and bachata with talented new artists, to supply a pulsating collection introducing a piece of the Dominican Republic to dance floors around the world. Enjoy!......at 192.0 kb/sec!"

The Rough Guide To Australian Aboriginal Music

Various
Audio CD: FDO 2001-10-01
Label: World Music Network

"This collection of tribal, ambient, and folk music by Australia's aboriginal artists and tribes is an interesting snapshot of the various indigenous faces of Australia. Listeners will find much of the famed didgeridoo, sometimes as the cornerstone for tribal dreamtime rituals, sometimes leading the melodies in modern electronic pop music, sometimes setting the dark, ominous tone for ambient music. Highlights include Archie Roach's melodic folk tune "Native Born," a sweet lament about the loss of aboriginal land and culture; Gapu's "Celebration" with Rachel Nehanda Woods's lovely chant; and Ruby Hunter's "Kurongk Boy, Kurongk Girl." But make no mistake, the Rough Guide folks include enough traditional tribal chant to please those looking for authentic Australian aboriginal music. An excellent comprehensive introduction. Enjoy!!!... at 160.0 kb/sec!"

The Rough Guide To Americana

Various

Audio CD: FDO 2002-01-15
Label: World Music Network

"The World Music Network has released a broad range of "Rough Guides" to certain musical genres, from Cumbia to Flamenco to Klezmer. Most are fantastic compilations. This installment features music that can be described as alternative country, insurgent country, or no depression. The name "Americana" is tricky. I consider Americana music to be American cultural music, or music clearly influenced by American cultural music. This can mean anything from jazz to bluegrass to zydeco. However, many folks define Americana as a specific genre, as is the case here. Rather than debate the point, I'll just let it be. Many of the usual suspects that one would expect on such a compilation, such as Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, and Whiskeytown, are bypassed in favor of lesser-known performers. The tracks are almost all good, though there are few true stand-outs.
For the uninitiated, I would recommend Exposed Roots: The Best of Alt. Country, Uncle Tupelo's "No Depression," Son Volt's "Trance," and Whiskeytown's "Strangers Almanac." However, for those interested in delving deeper, this compilation will provide an entry point for exploring many under-exposed but worthy artists.. Enjoy!!!..... at 192.0 kb/sec!"
