The Rough Guide To The Music Of Kenya

Various
Audio CD: FDO 2004-05-10
Label: World Music Network
"High-energy benga music, with its pulsating beat and funky interlocking guitar riffs, has been at the forefront of Kenyan pop since the late 1960s. More recently, contemporary artists, such as Gidi Gidi Maji Maji and Nyota Ndogo, have been exploring the possibilities of merging traditional melodies, instruments and rhythms with new sounds from R&B and other international genres. In addition, taarab music – a mixture of Indian Ocean and coastal traditions – and rumba-based Swahili and Lingala music are phenomenally popular. This CD To The Music Of Kenya spans these styles from classic benga gems, to sparkling new taarab compositions, with a sampling of the most innovative sounds of Kenya’s hip hop generation. Enjoy!......at 320.0 kb/sec!"

The Rough Guide To Gypsy Swing

Various
Audio CD: FDO 2004-04-19
Label: World Music Network
"Forged by the work of Django Reinhardt – arguably the finest jazz guitarist of all time – Manouche or Gypsy swing is a fascinating blend of Gypsy virtuosity and American jazz. In 1930s France, this new ‘swing’ music had a profound impact on the local musical scene and although the music’s creator died in 1953, his music remains highly influential to this day. Django Reinhardt created a tradition, which has been perpetuated and developed by many exceptional contemporary musicians. The CD Gypsy Swing celebrates this style from the original Gypsy musicians of the time to those French and German musicians, mainly of Manouche origin, who have built on Django’s legacy and continue down the road of innovation. The Rough Guide To The Music Of Ethiopia

Various
Audio CD: FDO 2004-02-24
Label: World Music Network
"This CD is a fine introduction to the exotic twists and turns of the nation's song. Driving sax grooves, ululating vocals, funk guitar, fat horn sections, it's all here. Mostly electric and urban, the CD ends with a sample of traditional music by Aldaneh Teka, an azmari (the Ethiopian version of a griot) who sings and plays masenqo (a bowed single stringed viola). The music of Ethiopia is unlike anything else from Africa, and can be challenging to the uninitiated ear, but this collection is a great starting point. Enjoy!......at 320.0 kb/sec!"

The Rough Guide To The Music Of Brazil: ''Bahia''

Various
Audio CD: FDO 2004-07-12

Enjoy!......at 192.0 kb/sec!"

"Salvador de Bahia is Brazil’s most African city, where baroque cathedrals co-exist with temples to the African gods – and the influences of both are apparent in its music. The key to the Bahia sound is the lone voice backed by thundering percussion and surging anthemic choruses… If you want your carnival to last all summer, just keep playing this wonderful album." Over the years, Spanish stringed instruments and African rhythms have been incorporated into the array of indigenous styles, adding to the country’s diverse musical outpourings. The Rough Guide To African Rap

Various
Audio CD: FDO 2004-02-09
Label: World Music Network
"A musical revelation awaits listeners as they delve into this CD to African Rap, displaying the kind of grooves that are rocking twenty-first century urban Africa and the Diaspora. In Africa, wordplay has always been a great source of entertainment and social commentary, and rappers have responded to social and political issues by addressing such subjects as poverty, AIDS, famine, corruption and globalization at a time when the changing economic, political and media climate across Africa has resulted in less censorship and more freedom to be critical of people in power. Not all these tracks are strictly hip-hop but the rap element is ever-present. Some of the tracks are by world-renowned stars, while others have never been heard in the West. Rappers move easily across cultural divides; their community is a more global one and all these artists can hold their own whether outside Africa or within. Enjoy!......at 192.0 kb/sec!"

Audio CD: FDO 2003-08-04
Label: World Music Network

This album was released in conjunction with Amnesty International, a worldwide voluntary organisation, who campaign for human rights around the globe.

"A folk-music renaissance is taking place throughout Europe, as fiddle, accordion and acoustic guitar music – at times confined to rural villages – has once again become the rage throughout the continent. This album is an acoustic musical journey across the continent, featuring the leading virtuosos of Spanish flamenco, captivating vocalists of Portuguese fado and Greek rembetika, infectious Gypsy balladeers, enthralling Balkan choirs, energetic brass bands, and touching Nordic and Celtic fiddlers. In a continent that has been divided by linguistically defined political borders, as this collection reveals, Europe’s musical language is universal. Enjoy!......at 320.0 kb/sec!"
